Maschera quadro Palazzo Sciarra Colonna - Fondazione Roma

This section presents and explores in greater depth some of the principal projects of Fondazione Roma which, by virtue of the rigor of their implementation methodologies, as well as their originality and innovative character, represent true “cases of excellence” within the overall development path of the Foundation’s activities.

Cases of excellence:

Hospice

Between 1997 and 1998, at a time when awareness of palliative care issues in Italy was still limited, Fondazione Roma developed the project to establish a hospice in Rome, that is a residential care facility dedicated to the medical and spiritual assistance of patients with a limited life expectancy.

At that time, palliative care centers in Italy could be counted on the fingers of one hand, and in Rome in particular there was no such facility. The project came to fruition in 1999, and over the years the structure has undergone continuous updates and an expansion of its range of services, leading to the current configuration of the Hospice. Today, its services are aimed not only at terminally ill patients, but also at those suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Alzheimer’s disease.

Providing excellent care while placing the person at the centre of care and respect for their dignity, and delivering comprehensive support that addresses the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of patients in the final stage of life, has been the Hospice’s mission since its inception.

The facility, entrusted to the management of the instrumental body Fondazione Sanità e Ricerca, will soon undergo a further significant change, relocating to the new premises currently under construction in Via del Casaletto, Rome.

The new property, considerably larger than the current site in Via Poerio, will be surrounded by greenery and equipped with multimedia spaces for training activities, meetings of care teams, and coworking. These purpose-designed facilities will enable Fondazione Sanità e Ricerca to provide an even higher level of service to patients and their families, while also enhancing the working environment for healthcare and administrative staff.

VILLAGGIO Fondazione Roma

Also among its own initiatives, the most innovative and demanding in many respects is the Villaggio Fondazione Roma, a residential facility built from the ground up in the Bufalotta district of Rome.

The Village, dedicated to people with Alzheimer’s disease, is the first in Italy to faithfully replicate a model successfully tested in the Netherlands, in the town of Hogeweyk near Amsterdam. It was created to offer, entirely free of charge, an environment designed to improve the quality of life of those affected by this severe illness: a stimulating, safe, and reassuring setting that reproduces, as closely as possible, familiar lifestyles and daily routines.

The aim is to provide a therapeutic approach alternative to the traditional model, enabling each resident to preserve their remaining cognitive abilities more effectively and for as long as possible.

Since May 2024, the Village has also welcomed individuals affected by Parkinson’s disease, following the opening of a dedicated day-care center.

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING CENTER (CEDIA)

Fondazione Roma Diagnostic Imaging Center (CeDIA) Isola Tiberina Hospital – Gemelli Isola

The fruitful collaboration with Isola Tiberina Hospital – Gemelli Isola has, in recent years, led to the creation of the Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Center (CeDIA), named after Fondazione Roma. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and featuring interiors inspired by nature, the Center aims to enhance and strengthen diagnostic and treatment capabilities, as well as to improve the patient reception and care pathway.

The project is grounded in a shared vision of a new healthcare paradigm more digital, integrated, and patient-centered.

The Center, progressively upgraded over time thanks to the support of Fondazione Roma, seeks to ensure excellence in care through investments in next-generation technologies, including the use of Artificial Intelligence. Its ambition is to become a leading reference point for Diagnostic Imaging in Rome and at the national level.

CUORE CENTER (Cardiovascular Unique Offer Reengineered)

At the end of 2025, construction began on the CUORE Center (Cardiovascular Unique Offer ReEngineered), a revolutionary healthcare hub entirely dedicated to the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The project was born from a partnership between Fondazione Roma, as the main supporter and commissioning body, the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS, the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, and the Giuseppe Toniolo Institute for Advanced Studies.

Scheduled to be completed within three years on the campus of the Università Cattolica, the Center will implement a revolutionary hospital model both in terms of care and “human-centered high-tech” design that is sustainable, integrated into the local community, and ensures continuity of care with existing healthcare facilities.

The new hub will integrate high-level clinical expertise, advanced technologies, and innovative organizational models, with the aim of introducing a true paradigm shift in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and ensuring care pathways that are increasingly effective, sustainable, and patient-centered.

Fondazione Roma’s commitment does not, as is often the case, remain limited to mere financial support; it also acts as a guarantor of the project’s social and healthcare objectives, as well as its added value in terms of innovation. This commitment stems from the responsibility the Foundation feels toward the people it serves and the needs they express.

museo del corso – polo museale

Established at the end of 2024 through Fondazione Roma’s initiative to give the City a comprehensive museum institution, designed to place the visitor at its center and guided by the principles of inclusion, commitment to the local community, and cultural promotion that have always directed the Foundation’s work, the Museo del Corso – Polo museale quickly became one of the leading cultural institutions in the Capital.

In fact, the experience began in 1999, with the opening of the first exhibition space dedicated to major exhibitions that quickly established themselves on the national cultural scene. Today, the Museo del Corso has evolved into a true Museum Complex, ideally connecting the historic Palazzo Sciarra Colonna, unique for its combination of exhibition and archival rooms, as well as the richness of its 18th-century spaces designed by Luigi Vanvitelli with the exhibition areas of Palazzo Cipolla, dedicated to temporary exhibitions.

Palazzo Sciarra Colonna is open for guided tours, mostly free of charge, offering the opportunity to admire its 18th-century interiors, the Art Collection, and the Historical Archive, which houses the two fonds of the Monte di Pietà of Rome and the Cassa di Risparmio di Roma. The spaces also host temporary exhibitions, aimed at enhancing the historical, artistic, and cultural heritage preserved within the Palazzo, which today, unlike in the past, is open to everyone.

The spaces of Palazzo Cipolla, by contrast, are dedicated, as mentioned, to temporary exhibitions organized in collaboration with some of the most prestigious international museum institutions. In keeping with the Museum Complex’s ethos of inclusivity, specific pathways are designed for seniors and vulnerable individuals, alongside educational activities and visits tailored for schools and children. Additionally, the venue hosts talks, workshops, screenings, musical and performance events alongside the main exhibitions, all of which are entirely free of charge.

cemad – DIGESTIVE DISEASES CENTER

CEMAD was established through the joint initiative of Fondazione Roma and the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli with the aim of creating a leading center in Lazio capable of caring for patients with digestive system disorders. The Center focuses not only on individual pathologies but on the patient as a whole, respecting their uniqueness and providing comprehensive care rather than merely offering a diagnosis or treatment.

Patients coming to the hospital for treatment express the need to be understood throughout their care journey, including from cognitive and emotional perspectives. Accordingly, at CEMAD, patient care is highly personalized, with a multidisciplinary approach that integrates medical, psychological, and nutritional support an approach that proves highly beneficial for the patient.

The support provided over the years by Fondazione Roma, in the form of state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, has enabled the Center to be equipped with one of the very few hybrid operating rooms in Italy dedicated to gastroenterological conditions. It has also earned a top-ranking position worldwide in the category of best specialized hospitals in Gastroenterology.

fondazione roma PAVILION – idi HOSPITAL

Fondazione Roma Pavilion – IDI Hospital (Istituto Dermopatico dell’Immacolata, Rome)

The project’s objective, developed in collaboration with IDI, is to create a reference dermatology facility that integrates the various centers of clinical excellence within IDI IRCCS. The Pavilion aims to provide patients with dermatological conditions a personalized approach, utilizing the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tools capable of predicting and anticipating the onset of disease, all within a context focused on multidisciplinarity and translational medicine.

The Center is already the main reference point for dermatology in Italy and one of the most important in Europe.

Within the Fondazione Roma Pavilion are located:

  • Center for Regenerative and Immunological Clinical Dermatology (CEDRI), divided into specialty areas dedicated to immunology and regenerative dermatology. The spaces form a single cohesive area, housing outpatient clinics and offices exclusively serving CEDRI, which is designed as an autonomous Complex Operational Unit (UOC), while remaining integrated with the Department of Dermatology at IDI IRCCS.
  • Dermatological Day Surgery, the section of the Pavilion designated to host the expansion of the Dermatological Day Surgery Department.

Center for Research on Dermatological, Oncodermatological, and Rare Dermatological Diseases, entirely dedicated to accommodating the research studies of IDI IRCCS scientists.

Cycle path – Municipality of Rome Capital

The project, launched in 2025 in collaboration with the Municipality of Rome, involves the construction of a cycle path connecting the access area of the Mattatoio di Testaccio (Largo Giovanni Battista Marzi) to the existing ramp linking to the “Dorsale Tevere” cycling corridor, as part of a broader initiative to reclaim and redevelop an entire urban area.

The construction of the new cycle path represents the first concrete application in Rome of the public-private partnership regulations established by the new Public Procurement Code. These rules allow a private entity to carry out a project entirely at its own expense and under its own management, before handing it over to the community. Once again, this represents an intervention model with potential for replication in other contexts.

With this project, Fondazione Roma confirms its role as a driver of innovation and a promoter of sustainable development and urban regeneration, also engaging the community in the shared responsibility of safeguarding a public asset once the work is completed. The initiative involves the use of innovative and sustainable materials, from LED lighting for nighttime circulation to eco-friendly pavements.

“Fondazione Roma – The Value of Play” Award

Thanks to the collaboration between Lega Calcio Serie A and Fondazione Roma, the “Fondazione Roma – The Value of Play” Award was established in 2025. This new recognition is dedicated to Serie A Enilive Clubs that demonstrate fairness, respect for the rules, and sportsmanship both on and off the field throughout the entire top-tier Championship.

The Award was created with the shared goal of reaffirming the most authentic values of football, often overlooked: respect for opponents and referees, sporting fairness, and virtuous behavior by fans in the stands.

The winning Club is awarded €100,000, provided by Fondazione Roma, which at the direction of the honored Club will be donated to a non-profit organization to support initiatives with a high social impact, in the same manner as the “Gigi Proietti” Award.

Through the “The Value of Play” Award, Lega Calcio Serie A and Fondazione Roma reinforce their joint commitment to a form of football that is not only competitive but also exemplary and responsible.

“gigi proietti” award

Born from an idea developed during one of the “Simposi FondAzioneRoma”, titled “Ladies and Gentlemen, Good Evening. The Show in the Mirror” and held on October 1, 2024, the “Gigi Proietti Award” was created to appropriately celebrate this remarkable and versatile artist, just under four years after his passing.

Thanks to the collaboration between Fondazione Roma and the Gigi Proietti Foundation, the initiative came to fruition in 2025, immediately endowed by mutual agreement with a strong social significance.

The Award, divided into two categories—one for emerging young artists and one for established artists—aims not only to recognize young talent and well-known performers but also to support philanthropic organizations. In the “Established Artists” category, two prizes are awarded each year, one to a female and one to a male artist, selected for their distinguished careers and contributions to the cultural and performing arts scene. These recipients are asked to donate the prize money to two non-profit organizations of their choice.

In the “Young Artists” category, six awards are presented each year to six emerging artists, with the commitment that the prize money is used to support their artistic training.

The first edition of the Award was held on November 24, 2025, at the Teatro Sala Umberto in Rome. The event featured numerous artists who had the privilege of knowing Gigi Proietti, including Pierfrancesco Favino and Paola Cortellesi, who received the Award in the “Established Artists” category—€25,000 each, donated to non-profit organizations for social benefit. Other participants included Nicola Piovani, Renzo Arbore, Marisa Laurito, Stefano Fresi, Lillo & Greg, Massimo Wertmüller, Rodolfo Laganà, Paola Tiziana Cruciani, Pino Strabioli, Carlotta Proietti, and Marco Simeoli.

The jury, led by Pino Strabioli and composed of Ruggero Cappuccio, Stefano Fresi, Sabrina Knaflitz, and Marisa Laurito, also awarded the emerging young talents across the various categories. Each recipient received €10,000 to support their artistic training and the development of their theatrical careers.

Fondazione Roma and UIL. Roots of solidarity

Fondazione Roma and UIL – Roots of solidarity: together for affected families

The project has a dual objective: to provide immediate financial support and, at the same time, to strongly promote the message of prevention and a culture of safety as fundamental pillars of dignified work. The initiative involves a total allocation of €500,000, intended to provide 50 grants of €10,000 each to families who have lost a loved one during work activities in the Lazio region.

The idea originated on November 21, 2024, during the fifth Simposio FondAzioneRoma, titled “ENOUGH! A Culture of Prevention for Safe Work”, specifically dedicated to addressing the tragedy of workplace accidents.

On that occasion, in the presence of UIL Secretary General PierPaolo Bombardieri and prominent representatives from the worlds of institutions, business, and culture, the urgent need to join forces to provide concrete and timely responses to one of the most serious social emergencies of our time was strongly emphasized.

The agreement between Fondazione Roma and UIL establishes a streamlined procedure: in the event of a fatal accident, the relevant UIL sector or territorial office regardless of the victim’s union membership reports the case to the National Confederation, which initiates the verification process and forwards the documentation to Fondazione Roma. The Foundation, within ten working days of receiving the documentation, disburses the financial grant to the family.

The initiative represents a best practice that could be replicated in other contexts and by other institutions demonstrating the same sensitivity and commitment to addressing this issue.
